Effectiveness of LED Light Bulbs
Yielding light from electricity requires light bulbs and are a necessity for lighting dark areas. There are several types of light bulbs including LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent (CFs) light bulbs.LED is used by light bulbs which are solid-state lighting devices that are capable of fitting in standard screw-in connections. Light emitting diodes is the short form for LED used to generate light in bulbs. LED light bulbs to contain a diode which is a semiconductor that produces visible light once an electric current passes through it. Fluorescent bulbs filled with argon gas and a small amount of mercury are employed for use in compact fluorescent light bulbs. When an electric current pass through it, the cathode heats up sending out electrons which hit the argon and mercury. Mercury once excited produces ultra-violet light which is not visible by the human eyes. The fluorescent lamb is coated with the phosphor which when the UV light passes through it emits visible light. Mercury is a heavy metal being utilized by CFs light bulbs and very harmful to the human health hence the CFs light bulbs are not environmentally friendly.
The energy efficiency of the LED and CFs light bulbs varies considerably with the LED light bulbs being more efficient. The LED light bulbs do not require time for warming up as they start instantly once electricity is switched on. LED light bulbs are made from plastics which makes them more durable than other types of light bulbs made from glass. Cold weather is not a limiting factor of LED light bulbs to work properly. LED light bulbs minimize on cost as they last longer and use minimum energy as compared to CFs.
Lumen of light bulb should be one of the major consideration other than wattage during purchase of the LED light bulbs. Measurement of the brightness given off by a light bulb is what is referred to as lumen while the wattage is the measurement of the amount of energy a light bulb draws. CFs light bulbs draw much more energy than LED light bulbs for the same number of lumens hence LEDs are more energy efficient. The right color of Led light bulb should be considered since they have a wide color range and where the bulb will be used. A bright yellow color for an LED light bulb is shown by a small number of kelvins which are the unit for measuring color temperature. LED light bulbs require a direct current electrical power hence LED driver is required to convert the alternating current from the power supply.
Improved LED light bulbs have been developed with better efficiency, cost and output making them suitable for all environments. Fire may occur or failure of the LED light bulbs when compatibility with fixtures is not checked during installation.
